About

We started kicking around this idea of joining up some time back in 2015 during a spirited discussion about ARCHITECTURE coupled with a few pints of local brew… okay more than a few. Those who know us, know our discussions are deeply layered and complex… or is it the other way?

Before we tell you where we are going, we must give the history of where we have been.

Our friendship and architectural philosophy originated at the University of Idaho in the late 1980s. Chad, from Idaho County having lived in multiple places of, and Greg, a Montana native, first connected in a 100 level Surveying class. Professionally, we started working together in the early 1990s at the prestigious office of Hummel LaMarche & Hunsucker Architects at the 1324 Idaho St. office in Boise, Idaho.

Young and dedicated, we took advantage of the many opportunities presented.

WE HAVE STRONG IDEAS

We believe that Architecture must respond to and work within the environment it has been placed, evoke human response and be environmentally responsible. Our design solutions and style are our client’s vision. They are authentic and personal, thoughtful yet simply detailed and sculptured. We continually push ourselves to design better buildings through constant team discussion, design exploration, and refinement. We embrace the studio approach to design and shared ideas.

There is still much work to do.

NOW 20+ YEARS LATER

We both feel very fortunate that our paths have reconnected.  One important aspect to this is that we both want everyone to recognize where our careers originated and excellent projects we’ve been a part of.  We list our roles and where that experience occurred, including their accolades. We mention this in part as Professionals and the AIA’s Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct of attribution of credit.

HUMMEL FLASHBACK

Chad rose quickly within the company, taking on Project Management responsibilities of the firm’s larger and complex projects, like Boise State University’s South-end Expansion at Albertson Stadium and Idaho State University’s Stephens Performing Arts Center. His performance had been recognized and Chad was elevated to an Associate level in 1998. Additional responsibilities of Client Management for the Public Works and Higher Education clients were added until he departed in July 2004 to establish Slichter Architects.

Right away Greg established himself as the firm’s Lead Project Designer. One of his first projects as the design lead was the new facility for the Idaho Humane Society which received recognition in 1998 with the Award of Honor by the American Institute of Architects Idaho Chapter. It would be the first of many that he would serve in that role. In 2008, Greg became an Associate Architect, and Principal in 2011. His exceptional design sensibility is reflective through a full diversity of recognized project types from commercial, government, healthcare to educational throughout the Boise + Meridian metropolitan areas and Southern Idaho. After 20 years, Greg left the firm in June 2014.

ACQUIRING LARSON ARCHITECTS

Through a mutual relationship we approached Cornel Larson in early 2022 about acquiring Larson Architect’s assets while he was in the process of closing his practice.  Through discussion, we found our firms having common project types and clientele.  Cornel postponed retirement, and agreed to join SUA and continue his professional career moving forward.  Slichter Ugrin Architecture officially acquired Larson Architect’s assets October 2022.
